  • I was actually thinking the same thing. A huge spider carrying it's nasty egg sac dangled in front of me as I turned a corner. Out of fear and shock, I went across the other lane, and thank God(!) there was no on-coming traffic b/c it would have been a horrible accident. Those d@mn spiders!!

  • They weren't as thorough as they could be. Since many cracks cannot be seen by the human eye, instruments such as ultrasound must be used to detect them. This process takes time to inspect every inch of the plane, and according to the news, they only did visual checks.

  • There's always room for improvement. Look at the recent Colgan flight (Buffalo crash)- pilot error. With the airlines having financial cutbacks, don't assume that the quality of training and maintenance won't be affected.

  • Bad weather was also blamed on the Buffalo crash initially, but now we know it was due to pilot error. Once again, the media needs to stop jumping to conclusions. Many other planes flew through the same path/weather conditions as AirFrance 447 and did not crash.

  • No weather is not the #1 cause of crashes, pilot error is. 70% of crashes are due to pilot error. It is highly unlikely that weather alone would bring down a plane.

  • Technology has developed to help pilots detect microbursts, giving them enough time to avoid them or at least prepare the plane for entering one. Microbursts are not the same type of threat that they once were back in the 70s. Planes have de-icing systems as well.

  • 70% of crashes are due to pilot error. There are so many airbuses in use that every minute, an airbus takes off from an airport at some location in the world. Airbuses are still very safe.
